Aim

Public inquiries investigate some of the most tragic complex and controversial issues in society. This event will help participants prepare for giving evidence to public inquiries with a focus on statutory inquiries. We will look at how statutory public inquiries operate and what to expect if you called as a witness.  Taking examples from recent inquiries we will provide top tips for giving written and oral evidence and talk about what to expect at a hearing.  Participants will have an opportunity to practice giving oral evidence, using a fictionalised case study, and to see the results on video.

Who will benefit from attending?

Anyone who is likely to be called to give evidence to a public inquiry, particularly those who may be asked to give oral evidence.

Learning outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand the requirements that statutory public inquiries must meet under the Inquiries Act 2005, an inquiry’s power to gather evidence, the different stages of an inquiry, and what this means for you as a witness.

  • Obtain practical advice on preparing written and oral evidence.

  • Gain confidence in giving effective oral evidence at a public hearing.
